How Often Do You Have to Renew Your Medical Marijuana Card in Colorado?

The expiration date on your Colorado medical marijuana card is determined by the medical condition for which it was approved. Medical marijuana cards issued for disabling medical conditions may have a validity period lasting from 60 days to one year.

Do You Need a Medical Marijuana Card Renewal Doctor in Colorado?

Yes. Physician certifications for medical marijuana cards in Colorado are only good for one year. Hence, you must see a medical marijuana card renewal physician every time you plan to renew your medical marijuana card to get a new certification. In accordance with Section 25-1.5-106 of the Colorado Revised Statutes and Article XVIII, Section 14 of the Colorado Constitution, only qualified physicians and advanced practice practitioners with prescriptive authority may recommend medical marijuana in the state.

To recommend the use of medical marijuana for all debilitating and disabling medical conditions in Colorado, a healthcare provider must:

  • Be a Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy
  • Be in good standing and licensed to practice medicine in the state
  • Possess a valid, unrestricted DEA certification
  • Have an online account to submit certification

To recommend medical marijuana for disabling medical conditions only, a healthcare provider must be:

  • A dentist, physician assistant, advanced nurse practitioner, podiatrist, or optometrist
  • Be in good standing and licensed to practice in Colorado
  • Possess a valid, unrestricted DEA certification
  • Have an online account to submit certifications

Patients are required to find approved certifying physicians as the state does not maintain a registry for them to find healthcare practitioners with prescriptive authority.
