One-Mile Buffer Sparks Legal Debate in Colorado Springs Cannabis Rollout

18 January 2025

In Colorado Springs, a conflict is brewing over how to implement voter-approved recreational marijuana sales. Last November, residents supported Ballot Question 300, allowing existing medical dispensaries to transition into recreational sales with a 1,000-foot buffer from schools and treatment facilities. However, the City Council is pushing for a one-mile buffer, which could block most shops from making the switch. Adding to the controversy, council members are considering placing the issue back on the ballot this April. Advocates argue the council’s actions undermine the voters’ decision, while leaders cite concerns over maintaining the city’s military-friendly and family-oriented identity. Applications for recreational licenses are set to begin on February 10, but ongoing debates may delay progress.
